Classic Corollas in Daring Desert Dash
A dozen well-worn little Japanese sedans and coupes will tackle some of Australia’s toughest outback tracks in the name of fun, camaraderie and charity.
The 19th running of the annual Corolla Caper will begin from Kartmania at Gepps Cross in Adelaide’s northern suburbs at 8am, setting out on a 7-day, 2000km odyssey around South Australia’s Riverland, Central Murray and Southern Flinders Ranges.
What began as a fun ‘bash’ for old cars (and old men), has evolved into a fun and challenging family event that visits some of South Australia’s most scenic rural and outback locations.
In nearly 20 years, the event has raised almost $80,000 for Rotary Club charities such as ‘Cows for Cambodia’, ‘Isolated Children’s Parents Association’, Polio+, disaster aid for Water in Bhutan, the Neil Sachse Foundation and Heartbeat SA as well as other community interests and charities.
“It’s always been a great way to enjoy the fabulous Aussie outback,” says organising committee head, Ron Rogers, “while injecting funds into rural communities and raising money for worthwhile charities.”
This year’s charities include Keith District Hospital, Dementia Australia and End Trachoma
While the Corolla Caper is a non-competitive event, entrants will pay homage to the desert racers of the 1950s with playful recreations of the motor racing events that were once popular around Silverton including the Kimberley, Mundi Mundi and Umberumberka hillclimbs. Hence the name of the 2021 event - The Silverton Stakes.
While the major activities will be centred around the former mining outpost of Silverton, the entourage will also pass through Birdwood, Mannum, Tintinara, Lameroo, Pinnaroo, and Renmark as well as visiting Danggali and Ngarkat Conservation areas where participants will tackle the testing road conditions in their 40-year-old cars and camp under the stars.
