Chery receives 20,000 entries for ute naming competition

Chery Australia says it has received more than 20,000 submissions in a nationwide competition to name its upcoming plug-in hybrid diesel ute, scheduled for release in late 2026.

The competition, launched in early March, invited the public to propose a name for the new model, which the company says will be the first plug-in hybrid diesel ute.

According to Chery, the vehicle will combine diesel performance with electrified efficiency and is expected to offer a 1,000kg payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity.

The company said the level of engagement exceeded expectations, with entrants required to submit a rationale alongside their proposed names.

Chery Australia chief operating officer Lucas Harris said the response reflected strong local interest in the utility vehicle segment.

“We knew Australians would have strong views on what makes a good ute,” Harris said, adding that the volume and detail of entries had made the shortlisting process more complex.

The winning entrant will receive the first production vehicle when it becomes available in Australia.

Chery said a shortlist of names will be announced in mid-April, ahead of the vehicle’s market launch later in 2026.
