BMW R 12 G/S Enduro Review: Heritage Spirit Meets Modern Compliance

Story: Terry McCarthy

The latest addition to BMW Motorrad’s heritage-inspired line-up, the R 12 G/S Enduro, strikes a careful balance between nostalgic design cues and contemporary engineering requirements. Following earlier seat time on the R 12 S, this more dirt-focused variant reveals a broader versatility within the platform, while retaining the character that defines BMW’s air/oil-cooled boxer lineage.

At its core lies the familiar 1170cc air/oil-cooled flat twin, producing 80kW (109hp) and 115Nm. BMW’s continued refinement of this legacy engine to meet modern emissions and noise regulations is noteworthy. Power delivery is linear and accessible, with strong low-end torque building into a robust mid-range. While it does not match the outright performance of the newer 1300 platform, it remains competitive within its segment and more than sufficient for both road and off-road applications.

The Enduro variant introduces four selectable ride modes: Rain, Road, Enduro and Enduro Pro, the latter reserved for this higher-spec model. Power is delivered via a six-speed gearbox with shaft drive, complemented by a standard quickshifter. While slightly abrupt at lower speeds, the system becomes progressively smoother through the upper gears, outperforming earlier 1250-series implementations, though still not matching the refinement of the latest 1300 models.

Visually, the R 12 G/S Enduro is a compelling nod to the original R 80 GS, particularly in the Light White finish. Additional colour options include Night Black Matt and the premium Option 719 Aragonite. Build quality is exemplary, consistent with BMW’s reputation in this segment.

The Enduro’s 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel combination enhances off-road capability but contributes to a tall 875mm seat height. This may present challenges for shorter riders. Despite a kerb weight of 229kg (fully fuelled), mass is carried low, resulting in a surprisingly manageable feel at low speeds. Wide handlebars further aid manoeuvrability.

Suspension travel is generous, with 210mm at the front and 200mm at the rear, fully adjustable for preload, rebound and compression. In standard trim, the setup is firm yet compliant, offering a solid compromise between on-road comfort and off-road readiness. Standing ergonomics are well executed, reinforcing the bike’s genuine adventure credentials.

Braking performance is handled by axial-mounted Brembo calipers rather than the radial units found on the R 12 S. While requiring a firmer input, stopping power remains entirely adequate for the bike’s intended use. Michelin Anakee Wild tyres underline its off-road bias, delivering stability and predictability, albeit with slower steering response on bitumen.

It is important to frame expectations appropriately. The R 12 G/S Enduro is not a touring machine. Wind protection is minimal, and the firm seat may limit long-distance comfort for some riders. However, for those seeking a purist riding experience with modern safety systems—including ABS Pro, traction control, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring and heated grips—the package is comprehensive.

Fuel consumption averages between 5.1 and 5.5L/100km, requiring 95 RON fuel. Practicality is further supported by a 15.5-litre tank and straightforward rear preload adjustment for pillion use.

Ultimately, the R 12 G/S Enduro succeeds by embracing its identity. It is a motorcycle that prioritises engagement over outright performance, blending classic aesthetics with contemporary functionality. While premium pricing is inevitable, it aligns with similarly specified European competitors, supported by BMW’s five-year warranty and optional service packages.

For riders drawn to heritage design with genuine off-road capability, the R 12 G/S Enduro offers a distinctive and rewarding proposition—one that captures the spirit of earlier adventure machines while meeting the demands of today’s market.
